THE THEORY TEST
You must pass the Driving Theory test before you can take the Practical Driving Test.
It currently costs £23 to sit this test.
ONLY use the official booking website at nidirect.gov.uk
The Theory Test consists of 50 multiple choice questions (the pass mark is 43) and then the Hazard Perception section which consists of 14 video clips in which you must click when you see a hazard that would make you have to take action (the pass mark for this is 44 out of a total 75 points).
You must pass both parts to earn your theory certificate. So if you score 49 in the multiple choice and 42 in the hazard perception you will have to re-sit them both again.
Therefore it is vital you prepare properly for the test.
There are different apps available for android phones and tablets.
See Help/Faqs page.
THE PRACTICAL TEST (DRIVING TEST)
The cost is currently £45.50 (£62.50 on a saturday or weekday evening if available)
The test lasts between 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
During this time you will be asked to carry out an emergency stop, one reversing exercise and you will drive independently (see Help/Faqs page) for approximately 10 minutes.
You must firstly meet the eyesight requirements by reading a number plate at the legal minimum distance of 67 feet and answer 2 safety questions (1 show me and 1 tell me). See Help/Faqs page.
You will be offered the opportunity to take your instructor or accompanying driver on test with you. This is of course YOUR choice so feel free to say "yes please" or "no thank you".
They can sit behind you on the test but cannot say or do anything to interfere with the test.
